Important places near Basara
Basara is a town in nirmal district, in the Telangana State. The town is famous for Gnana Saraswati Temple, located on the bank of River Godavari. There are two famous Saraswati temples and Basara’s Gnana Saraswati temple in one of the two and the other temple of goddess Saraswati was located in Kashmir. In Basra’s Gnana Saraswati temple people use to celebrate the learning ceremony called “AKSHARA ABHASAM” by bringing their children to the temple, it is 205km away from Hyderabad.
History of Basara:
According to the Mahabaratha, Maharshi Vyasa along with his disciples and sage Viswamitra determined to settle down in cool and serene surroundings after the Kurukshetra war, so he came to Dandaka forest and selected this place, from there Maharshi Vyasa offered prayers and spent time in this place so at first it was called as “VASARA” and later turned as “BASARA”. The temple was constructed by the Karnataka King called “BIJIALUDU” in the 6th century.

- BASARA TEMPLE(Gnana Saraswati Temple)
Basara Saraswati temple is one of the oldest temples in Telangana State and dedicated to the goddess of Knowledge Saraswati Devi. People often do prayers and learning ceremony functions in the temple before they start formal school education. The temple also consists of idols of goddess “Lakshmi” and “Kali”. The temple is at a distance of 1 Km away from Basara bus station and located on the left bank of River Godavari.
- Godavari River( bathing Ghats)
Bathing Ghats are situated at a distance of 2 km from the Basara Bus station and located on the Godavari River. The River called Manjeera is merged into the River Godavari at this point; pilgrims use to take bath at the Ghats before going to the temple. Near the Ghats, boating is also available throughout the day. Many of the pilgrims use to go through the boats before the construction of the road bridge.
- Lord Shiva Temple
Lord Shiva Temple was located at a distance of 2 km from the Basara bus station. The temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva and situated near the bathing Ghats on the banks of Godavari River, this temple is also considered as one of the old temples.
- Vyasa Maharshi Cave
The cave is at a distance of a Km from the Basara bus station. The cave is located on the hilltop which is next to the Gnana Saraswati temple. The cave has a narrow entrance and you can see the marble idol of sage Veda Vyasa. People use to say that during meditation Veda Vyasa stayed there after the completion of Kurukshetra war sage came across this place and stayed.
- Ashok Sagar lake
The lake is at a distance of 26km from the Basara bus station. The Jankampet Lake is converted to Ashok Sagar Lake, it is a huge reservoir with beautiful locations, and boating facilities, children’s playing area etc. will be there to entertain the tourists. The garden is spread over an area of 2 acres with good landscape and natural setting rock cuts and marble statues.
- Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple
The temple is located 27 km away from the Basara bus station and situated at Jankampet in Nizamabad district and the temple is famous for Astahmuki Pushkarini which is on the top of the hill. The temple was built during Rastrakuta times and later renovated by the Chalukyas and some other rulers.
- Ali Sagar Dam
It is 28km from the Basara bus station and located near Jankmpet village. Ali Sagar Dam is a picnic spot and it was constructed by the Nizams of Hyderabad in 1931. There is a garden near the dam, which is spread over a total land area of 33acres. The garden is famous for its tree house fountains, deer park, and flower garden. The deer park was established in 1985 and consists of many species of deer.
