Actually, Diabetes is an affliction caused due to the high blood sugar or glucose levels. Normally glucose enters the body through the diet which you are taking. Doctors refer to this as “DIABETES MELLITUS”. Glucose levels increases due to the insufficient production of Insulin or not responding or reacting to the insulin by the body cells properly or both causes the increment of glucose in the blood. People having Diabetes experience frequent urination called as “polyuria”, thirsty (polydipsia) and hungry (polyphagia).
Having high levels of sugar in blood can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys and nervous system and it also leads to heart problems. Women during pregnancy gets the diabetes in some cases is called “gestational diabetes”. Some of the symptoms include fatigue, not healing of bruises; male sexual dysfunction, numbness and tingling in hands and feet. So frequent checking must be done to find out the levels of glucose in the blood.
Diabetes is a long lasting condition and it was estimated that around 382 million people are having diabetes throughout the world. Mostly diabetes is of three types:
- Type 1 diabetes:
In this case, the body does not produce insulin and around 10% of the diabetes causes because of type 1 and this is called as insulin dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes or early onset diabetes. During the early ages people develop type 1 diabetes. People under this type 1 will need to take insulin for rest of their life.
- Type 2 diabetes:
In this case, body produces insufficient insulin and the impact will be on the functions of the body and 90% of diabetes cases are of this type. Overweight and obesity are the two main reasons for causing the type 2 diabetes. People having these problems will have lots of chances to get this type 2 diabetes. Compared to those have good and healthy weight. Body releases some chemicals due to overweight and that can weak the heart and metabolic system
Men having low testosterone levels are found to have type 2diabetes. Researchers from the Edinburgh University, Scotland say that low testosterone levels are connected to the resistance of insulin.
People having type 2 diabetes needs to follow good diet, active, monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels regularly and should stop smoking which is having a serious impact on cardiovascular health.
- Gestational diabetes:
During the pregnancy females are affected by this. More number of gestational diabetic patients can control their diabetes by maintaining healthy and good diet, doing exercises. Some needs to take blood-glucose controlling medications. Uncontrolled gestational diabetes causes problems during the child birth.
Most of the people having type 2diabetes initially have prediabetes means the stage where the glucose levels are higher than the normal condition which is not sufficient to merit diabetes diagnosis. Researchers say that during the prediabetes stage some damage to the circulatory system and heart may already have taken place.
- People with type 1 treated with regular insulin injections along with diet and exercise.
- People with type 2 diabetes are treated with tablets, exercise, diet sometimes needed insulin injections.
Diabetes mellitus called as a metabolic disorder. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, after having food pancreas releases insulin to move the glucose present in cells. Immediately after entering the glucose into the cells levels of glucose drops.
Complications due to uncontrolled diabetes:
- Eye complication
- Foot complication
- Heart problems
- Hearing loss
- Gastro paresis
- Healing of wounds
Determination of diabetes:
- A1C test – min 6.5%(diabetes)
– 5.7% – 5.99% (prediabetes)
– < 5.7% (normal)
- FPG(fasting plasma glucose test)- < 126mg/dl (diabetes)
- 100mg/dl to 125.99mg/dl(prediabetes)
- OGTT(oral glucose tolerance test) – min 200mg/dl(diabetes)
- 140mg/dl to 199.9mg/dl(prediabetes)
- < 140mg/dl(normal)
Tips to manage the Diabetes:
- Doing exercises or walking in the morning.
- Weight control
- Maintaining good diet
